The Funeral for the Viaduct
Seattle, WA

don't know what the viaduct is? click here

I have thoughts, ideas and feelings about public spaces.  I am intimate with the Viaduct, and the large space it occupies. My office is very near the Viaduct and I once lived near the Viaduct.  I see major flaws in the degraded state of the Viaduct. The earthquake concerns are real. I have gazed at the structural reinforcements in perhaps the same way the folks down in New Orleans gazed at the reinforced levees. I also cringe at the original design that divides the city from the waterfront.  I have wished to go from Pioneer Square to the waterfront without having to wade through rats, dumpsters and outdoor neighbors.

I arrived at the projected animated cracks after a mock up revealed they made the biggest impression. We secured a location to project from, the use of two huge 1000w projectors, and went through two days of real time mock-ups in order to get it right.

With the help of friends a reception was planned in a loading dock were the projection was visible.

The cherry on top had to be when,  in the middle of the reception, a marching band unexpectedly came down the street and stopped under the viaduct and pointed their tuba’s, trumpets and drums in our direction.

The reception poured out of the loading dock to dance in the street.
Dancing under the Viaduct!
It felt like victory.
